Galaxy A80 Contract Deals – How To Find Them

With the Galaxy A80, Samsung introduces the top model to its mid-range A-series smartphones (although the Galaxy A90 5G is out very soon and set to supercede it). In addition to powerful hardware, the A80 offers new selfie opportunities with its innovative camera technology. It's not cheap though, and Samsung look set to make the A90 even more expensive - to the point that the prices are almost on-par with the "S" range. So is it worth buying this popular phone and how much does it cost per month? Let's find out...

What you need to know:

  • Retractable triple camera
  • Large display in 20:9 format
  • Reasonable 3700 mAh battery

Up to now, the Galaxy A70 was the top of the (so called) upper-middle class of Samsung phones, but now the Galaxy A80 joins in between the A70 and the more premium device- the Galaxy S10e.

Should I buy an Galaxy A80?

What makes the new top model of the A series an eye-catcher, is the innovative use of the triple camera: If you use it as usual as the main camera back, you have the choice between a 48-megapixel camera with wide-angle optics and an 8-megapixel camera with 123 degree ultrawide angle. This is joined by a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor to measure the depth of space for portraits with digital bokeh.

The real innovation is that you use the same camera for selfies: with a light tap on the selfie icon, the camera moves out of the case at the top and turns 180 ° towards the user in a flash. The advantage: The same high-performance camera module is also available as a front camera, without losing any space on the display surface.

Camera

Thanks to the camera embed here, the huge 6.7-inch OLED display is almost rimless. It resolves in Full HD Plus quality (2400 × 1080 pixels) and protects an integrated fingerprint sensor. TechRadar reckons the display delivers strong contrasts and intense colours. Given the huge format, the sharpness is just going to be okay though, not massively impressive - but don't write it off completely. This is a mid-range phone and Samsung could not make it hugely impressive in every department...!

The rest of the equipment is also worth a look. Inside, a new Snapdragon 7150 processor with 8 cores is working. Together with a RAM of 8 GB, most applications should run smoothly. The internal memory is very generous with 128 GB, if necessary you can extend it by a Micro SD card.

Enough energy is provided by a 3700 mAh battery, which should soon be ready for use again thanks to the Super Fast Charging function.

Our Verdict - the Galaxy A80

With a hardware rating of 4 out of 5 stars, the Samsung Galaxy A80 meets most people's demand - except power users, perhaps. The main positive is that it's a great mid-range phone, with most of the features that most users could want. Samsung are at risk of eating too far into S sales here, with the A range, particularly when it looks as great as it does.

But negative points can also be found. The mechanics are not convincing. You always have to be on your guard and treat the smartphone even more caring than the already vulnerable other phones in the Samsung stable. Also disappointing is the slow fingerprint sensor.

What alternatives should I consider?

All in all, the Samsung Galaxy A80 is a smartphone with some huge benefits, albeit with a very focussed target audience, and a higher than expected price. Only Samsung enthusiasts should take a closer look at the Galaxy A80. For everyone else, there are less playful, but more powerful top models, such as the Huawei P30, or the OnePlus 7 Pro. They cost less, as they don't have the "Samsung Premium", but have the same or better features.

How much does the Galaxy A80 cost?

In the UK, the Samsung Galaxy A80 costs £599.

Some stores will sell it for slightly less as time passes. However if you prefer to buy on contract, you can pay around £35 a month for a 24 month contract.
