Ask anyone. They all love the iPad Mini, so it was a bit of a surprise that it took Apple so long to update it - the model before this one was actually launched all the way back in 2014. Back before Brexit, Trump and Boris Johnson. The iPad mini 2019 is Apple’s most portable iPad, and it’s deceptively powerful for its small size. Compared to the iPad Pro 12.9" it looks positively tiny - in a good way.
The little Mini has a bright 7.9-inch display that works with the Apple Pencil and a chipset that smokes the small tablet competition. Its price is equally deceptive, costing more than the larger iPad 9.7. For its asking price, we would have loved to have seen an 'iPad Pro mini' and Apple Pencil Gen 2 support, but it’s hard not to love this charming little tab.

Make no mistake, the iPad Mini 2019 is the iPad mini 5 that you've been waiting for Apple to deliver, and it's everything you've wanted – as long as you didn't want a dramatic upgrade.
It's Cupertino’s most satisfyingly totable iPad and proof that things won’t change very much when serious small tablet competition is nowhere to be found in 2019 - can you name any small rivals? Probably not.
The familiar 7.9-inch display feels perfectly sized to grip in one hand and operate with two, just as it did when the iPad mini 4 released nearly five years ago. Almost nothing has been changed on the outside - the Home button is still there, and does make the thing look a bit dated, but this is an entry-level model and Apple would be relucant to do away with the Home button yet.
Beneath the bright display, however, Apple tweaked the iPad mini 2019 to work with the Apple Pencil. It’s so easy to quickly pick up this tablet, flick open the Smart Cover and instantly scribble some notes. It’s portable and carefree to use and then simply toss in a bag.
Useful for eBooks
Using devices more is sometimes a bad thing, but this iPad lends itself to reading far more than it does scrolling through endless timelines. It's not an iPad for Instagram or Twitter. At its heart it's a great eReader, news app displayer and Netflix enabler.
Unlike Apple's other iPads, the Mini 5 is not striving to replace your laptop, but instead quietly does some things better than one. If you don't mind the ageing design, the smallest iPad could be a better option for you than any other.

Apple's claim of 10 hours of battery life when 'surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching video or listening to music' proved accurate in Foned testing, though as expected I found it drained much faster when on 4G or video calling. We had to charge it about once every three days.
