S20 Ultra: Intro

This big and bold Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G is at the top of the S20 product range and not only is it more powerful than the standard model, it also comes with a 108-megapixel rear-facing camera. That's pretty impressive! But is it worth considering when the pricing isn't exactly affordable? Read on for our review...

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G features a large 6.9-inch Dynamic Amoled  (DA) display, high-resolution quad camera with depth sensor and is available in an optional 512 GB version.

Just as the Plus version was the top model available for the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Ultra version takes the crown as the top-of-the-range model in the S20 range (confusingly, there is also an S20 Plus, but the Ultra is better this time round...).

The fact that this is a premium phone becomes evident quickly -- just look at that huge Infinity-O display, which measures no less than 6.9 inches (17.44cm) diagonally. On top of this, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has the same high-end specifications as the rest of the S20 range. - that is, the touchscreen has an elongated aspect ratio of 20: 9 and, like the standard model, has a resolution of 3200 × 1440 pixels in WQHD+ quality. Wow!

This big beast can also play higher-contrast HDR10+ media and is characterized by a fast 120Hz frame rate, which promises smooth gameplay. To ensure that high-quality films become an acoustic success, like the other S20 models, the S20 Ultra is equipped with stereo speakers. AKG is said to have optimised these by using Dolby Atmos. It's a fully-featured mega phone bundle , but it's not cheap.

Selfie camera with 40 megapixels

Compared to the regular Galaxy S10, this time round the display appears almost borderless, so that the rounded outer edges blend more smoothly into the narrow sideline bezel.

This range-topping Samsung model yet again forfeits having a notch. Instead, the selfie camera is hidden behind a centrally arranged round recess at the top of the display. In contrast to the cheaper Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 standard model, a 40-megapixel camera is used instead of a 10-megapixel camera.

In addition to an auto HDR function for high-contrast recordings, unsurprisingly this phone also masters 4K with a maximum of 60 frames per second. A fingerprint sensor is also integrated in the display, and the entire front is protected by scratch-resistant Gorilla 6 glass.

Rear camera with 108 megapixels

The robust protective glass merges seamlessly into the back, so that the feel is characterised by an all-round impression of quality. There's no plastic here on the rear unlike the "A" range of phones.

Speaking of the back, it is only broken open by the rectangular camera panel in the upper left corner and the effect is stunning. The panel of the Ultra version is slightly wider, probably to emphasise the powerful camera technology.

The quad camera consists of a main camera with a wide-angle lens, a tele camera with 10x optical zoom, an ultra-wide-angle camera and a time-of-flight sensor for depth measurement. All of these camera enhancements give a clear indication of where Samsung have aimed the product - at power-users.

What distinguishes the Ultra model most from the other "lesser" S20 versions is the high-resolution Nonacell sensor of the image-stabilised main camera. At 1/1.33 inches it is even larger than the sensors of the Galaxy S20 Plus and standard Galaxy S20 4G version and, as mentioned earlier, this camera has a resolution of 108 megapixels.

Apart from the upcoming  Xiaomi Mi Note 10, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is now the newest addition to also run in the exclusive 100-megapixel club. Where this camera is slightly different to the former, though, is thanks to the 9-in-1 pixel binning technology, which adds up the image to practical 12 megapixels, more details should be recognisable, especially at night.

Optical 10x zoom and 8K video

Still on cameras, but they're important. Note that the telephoto lens, on the other hand, has a resolution of 48 megapixels. In addition to the 10x hybrid optical zoom, it also has a 100x digital zoom, which is also supported by an optical image stabiliser.

Finally, the rear camera is completed by a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens. The 4th lens consists of a 3D depth sensor, which enables you to take pictures with professional-looking quality.

In video mode, the main camera films at a super 8K, and at a maximum of 30 frames per second which is supported by "action cam" style image stabilisation.

Under the bonnet

Compared to the standard model, the Ultra version is bursting with performance. The powerful Exynos 990 processor is supported by 12 GB of RAM, and that’s if you choose the cheaper 128 GB version. The (very expensive) 512 GB version has a staggering 16 GB of RAM available.

As with the other models in the Galaxy S20 range, you can expand the internal memory by a micro SDXC card to a maximum of 1 terabyte. There is also an option to run 2 SIM cards with dual SIM mode.

S20 Ultra: Battery

All this power would be useless without a battery that is up to the task. The huge 5000mAh battery enables a practical runtime. But this is noticeably reflected in the weight. Note that you may want to get an idea of how big the phone is - according to this review, only a few years ago we'd have called this a phablet or even tablet, it's huge!

The S20 Ultra weighs in at a bulky 221g, while the Plus and standard models remain well below the 200g mark. But the extra weight is negligible and well worth it, as Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra can be charged wirelessly or quickly using a 45-watt power adapter.

If you're willing to pay the higher upfront cost, then the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G can be had for a very competitive monthly cost, making it the obvious choice for anyone who wants a top-quality Samsung Galaxy that not only looks the part, but can perform just as well. You will be paying a premium if you buy one at launch, but expect the price to fall soon after.

How much is the Galaxy S20 Ultra in UK?

The price is £1299. That's a lot, for a 5G phone even. But we think it's worth it if you're a poweruser or phone fan, as this is arguably one of the best phones ever.

Samsung have gone at this all guns blazing and if you can afford the monthly contract cost then it's a phone you'll cherish for a few years yet.
