Tips for using Siri on your iPad or iPhone

If you own an iPad or iPhone, then you probably already talk to Siri, but did you know that there’s more to this feature than meets the eye? Knowing when to use Siri for the optimum results and reactions can be a real help in your day-to-day life, and you can also alter all sorts of things, such as the types of responses you get and the voice. Furthermore, if you don’t want Siri to know your spoken history, you can delete it to better protect your privacy.

Assist Siri in pronouncing names

Every now and then, Siri mispronounces a name, normally in your contacts list. When this happens, Siri might say something along the lines of ‘let me know if I should learn how to say their name.’ You can reply to this by saying ‘Hey Siri, learn how to pronounce (person’s name)’. Siri will then confirm that it has the correct person and ask you to say the person’s name, giving you various pronunciation choices afterwards. All you have to do next is tap the play symbol next to each one, hear it and choose the one that you like best.

Utilise Siri with your apps

You can use Siri when you’re in Apple apps or any supported third-party app. This feature allows you to search for content inside the app. To investigate this, go to Settings, tap Siri & Search, then go to Siri Suggestions where you can select a certain app to view and allow its support for Siri. Then you can search for specific content within that app, for example, ‘Hey Siri, find Spain in Google Maps’.

Correct Siri’s mistakes

By altering Siri to allow it to display your question on screen, you can also correct Siri if it misunderstands you. To do this, ask Siri a question where you intentionally mispronounce a word and if Siri provides the incorrect response, you can select the area of text and correct the mistake. After you’ve done this, Siri will respond to the corrected question.
