About Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) — Review, Specs & more

This is the current model of the 2021 5G iPad Pro (12.9 inches). You can also compare pay monthly deals on the smaller, latest  generation iPad Pro 11" (2018) here.

With the Apple iPad Pro 12.9 ", you get the largest and most powerful tablet that Apple has ever produced. There are some improvements to general usability versus the previous model, too; indeed particular attention has been paid to the new USB-C connector: this allows more accessories to be used. So is it worth getting an iPad Pro 12.9 on contract? Let's find out...

iPad Pro 12.9 - what you need to know:

  • Slimmer and more powerful than its predecessor
  • Bright LCD display
  • Notchless design
  • Improved pencil (optional)

The 2018 edition of the iPad Pro is available with an 11 inch display and also as a 12.9 inch as seen here. Both now have even less frame and have become slimmer and lighter, and note that they do come without a headphone jack, a home button and a fingerprint scanner - as the latest generation iPad is now unlocked only by face recognition (FaceID).

As an input device, the Apple Pencil 2 is optionally available (NB: not included as standard). It can be magnetically fixed to the upper edge of the iPad Pro 12.9 and charged via induction, and according to most reviews it understands gestures - and then some!

The display hasn't changed much from the previous generation, sadly, although that isn't really a bad thing as the huge Retina display here is already pretty high quality. It is easily readable in direct sunlight and the LCD offers a very high colour fidelity that very few other tablets offer.

Under the bonnet

Onto what's underneath: the A12X processor is even stronger than its predecessors and can easily cope with elaborate demands - from apps to games. As the Pro is aimed at business users, this is to be expected.

There are also improvements to the camera - it has new sensors and a stronger flash. Somewhat revolutionary is the removal of Lightning port - Apple's own charging / wire solution - in favour of USB-C. Is this a sign of things to come? Let's hope so.  And Apple haven't stopped there when it comes to wires either: the iPad Pro can not only be charged, but also connected to a monitor now in much the same way.

One thing to be aware of is the cost of repairs. If you are on budget then the iPad Air 3 does exactly what most of the iPad Pro does , but at about half the cost on a pay monthly contract. You can compare iPad Air 3 contracts here.

Our Verdict

So despite being called the iPad Pro, as in, ‘for professionals’, the new iPad Pro 12.9 for 2018/2019 has features that make it the best of the bunch for all users, whether you want it for streaming content and playing games, creating skillful sketches or musical masterpieces, or just juggling loads of different work documents.

But the mighty collection of features comes with an even mightier price tag, and the iPad Pro 12.9 needed to impress us a lot to justify its considerable cost. Luckily, it does just that. If you're looking for a Cellular iPad with 4G connection then this is THE model to get. if your budget stretches this far.

How much does the iPad Pro 12.9 cost?

The UK price is £1,199, but you can also get it on contract for about £25 a month through Sky, on a 24 month deal. This is for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

Foned completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) ee contract or a Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear – Foned is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time – that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 0 Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) deals, our cheapest Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) deal over the entire life of the contract is £770.00, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

Foned's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (2021) handset cost.
